Plaice (Pleauronectes platessa)

A "right eyed" flatfish. Early in their development they lie on their left side with eyes migrating onto the right (upper side). Generally found over sandy bottom and distinguished by their red spots on a sandy brown background colour. They are well camouflaged against the sandy bottom and sometimes will only be seen when they move away from the divers shadow. Mostly juvenile fish will be seen up to about 6" in length.

Flounder (Platichthys flesus)

Normally a "right eyed" flatfish with eyes migrating onto the right side early in their development. Variants may however be seen lying on the "wrong" side. May be found on sandy / muddy or hard bottom. Colouring is distinctive with dark blotchy appearance. Some fairly large 12" fish have been found in shallow waters (3-5m) close inshore

Collie Head, Aberdeenshire

In Rock crevice - Rosehearty, Aberdeenshire

Topknot

A group of "left eyed" flatfish with eyes having migrated to the left side of the body. Found on hard rocky bottom whether flat rock outcrops or the surface of flat crevices in reefs. They appear as adept at clinging to the upper overhanging side of the crevice as lying on the bottom and will then sometimes give themselves away by the rippling movement of their fins .
