Ellon SAC Training

Although a relatively small club, we have a reasonable number of Instructors and are happy to take new trainees, complete training courses started elsewhere, or arrange crossovers from other agencies. Most basic training takes place on Thursday evenings. From mid August to the end of May we hire the Ellon Community Centre pool from 8.15- 9.30pm, two Thursdays out of three excluding the Christmas school holidays. The session is not only used for training but for fitness and socialising, the social side continuing after the pool at the "Tollbooth". Dry sessions may take place at a variety of venues in and around Ellon according to availability and may be taken up during the "close" season by lectures, dry practical sessions, slide shows etc. . "Catch up" theory sessions may also on occasion be conducted at the Instructors home. During the summer Thursday evenings may be used for open water training and general diving, weather permitting.

In line with BSAC rules, trainees and Members must complete a medical declaration prior to undertaking anything other than an initial "Come and Try" session on the aqualung. Forms can be obtained from the Diving / Training Officer or Secretary or from the appropriate pages on the BSAC Website. These pages also have a section answering many questions that arise regarding medicals.

The club has a number of sets of kit available for use by members at nominal charge during their training or until they can purchase their own.

Prospective members are reminded that all training is done voluntarily by other members (often at considerable cost to themselves) when it can be fitted in around their work and other family/social commitments. Trainees are expected to show commitment to attend regularly in order to get maximum benefit from the instructor availability. For open water training it must be remembered that instructor availability has to be linked in with suitable weather conditions and tide times. This may mean delays in completing training if you are not able to take up the opportunities when they arise.

Ocean Diver is the entry level qualification and has a 20m maximum depth limit.

The syllabus consists of 7 lectures and a theory exam (multiple choice),

Other training can also be undertaken in conjunction with Skill Development Courses run within the club or under the BSAC Regional Coaching scheme which is supported by instructors from within the club.
